President Tinubu's decision threatens Nigerian's democracy
By Yusuf Aminu Yusuf
Democracy is government in which power and civic responsibility are exercised by all adult citizens, directly, or through their freely elected representatives. Democracy rests upon the principles of majority rule and individual rights.
Justice, fairness, equality, and equity are the backbone of any country that claims to practice democracy. Development encompasses all these values. Wherever a country or nation lacks them, it is considered an underdeveloped nation.
Nigeria, as one of the Global South countries, has witnessed widespread unrest and uprisings due to hunger, unemployment, inequality, and injustice among its citizens.
In any country with a democratic system of government, the three arms of government the executive, legislature, and judiciary must work and function properly. However, in Nigeria, the issue is different. Both the legislature and judiciary are subservient to the executive, hindering the country's development.
Earlier this week, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended the elected Rivers State Governor, Fubara, his deputy, and the state legislators. This decision is unconstitutional and against the law.
Many Nigerians and opposition parties have expressed concerns and called on the President to reconsider, but he ignored this and appointed a retired military officer as the sole administrator of Rivers State.
As our elected representatives, we called on senators and members of the House of Representatives to reject this recall decision by the President. Unfortunately, they have added fuel to the fire by supporting the President's proclamation. There is a huge lacuna between our nation development and its potential. Our leader actions hinder progress.
Martin Luther King Jr. Says “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere" what President Tinubu and legislators did could lead to injustice occurring in more states in Nigeria, Any governor from an opposition party will be under threat, and democracy itself now and in the future.
Fellow Nigerians, it's time to challenge this system. We must unite to save democracy and the future of our beloved country Nigeria. We need to spring into action, as actions speak louder than words. We remain hopeful for a brighter future. God bless Nigeria and its people.
