EXCLUSIVE:Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, Admitted to Northwest University for LL.B Programme
In a move that has sent ripples through the Nigerian academic community, the 16th Emir of Kano, Khalifa Muhammadu Sanusi II, has officially been offered admission to study Law at Northwest University, Kano.
The development was confirmed via an official admission letter dated January 12, 2026, issued by the University’s Directorate of Examinations, Admissions, and Records. According to the document, the monarch has been granted Special Admission into the 200-level (Direct Entry) of the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) Common and Sharia Law programme for the 2024/2025 academic session.
The Scholar-King Returns to the Classroom
Despite already holding a PhD in Law from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London—which he completed in late 2024—the Emir’s decision to pursue a local LL.B. highlights his commitment to the Nigerian legal system.
Sources close to the Emirate Council suggest that the monarch seeks to bridge the gap between his high-level scholarly research and the practical application of Common Law and Sharia in the Nigerian judicial context. His doctoral thesis famously focused on the "Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform," a subject he now seems eager to ground in formal Nigerian legal training.
